The history of the thermoelectric Centrale Montemartini
The thermoelectric power station was built at the beginning of the 20th century by the AEM (the municipally-owned electric utility). This electric power station was extremely useful mainly throughout World War II where it was the only source of energy for the city of Rome because it was the only station that was not bombed.
After half a century the station became too expensive and stopped being used in 1963.
It was later on fully abandoned and the idea of demolishing the building was considered. In the end though, the whole building was restored and some of it became used as offices, laboratories, and storage areas. The boiler room though became an exhibition area.
Centrale Montemartini Archaeological Museum
Nowadays Centrale Montemartini is a museum and it’s the perfect example of how industrial architecture can become an extraordinary home for art!
The exhibition is characterized by the continuous contrast between classical archeology and its industrial environment with big machines located in the background of beautiful statues.
The gallery is divided into four rooms: the Hall of the Machines, the Boiler Room, the Hall of Columns, and the Atrium, each of these rooms has its own theme, going from animals to poetry and battles.
Centrale Montemartini is easily reachable with public transportation; it’s just a 10-minute walk from the Garbatella metro station.
