Formerly built on the ancient 7 Hills, Rome surely doesn’t lack breathtaking views. You can find them either in parks, gardens or among the monuments here and there in the city center. Rome has a millenary history to recount and its old town is full of fascinating places to discover.
To get the best out of it, you can admire its highlights from a privileged spot.
Whether you prefer a rooftop terrace bar or a green area to relax, Rome skyline will amaze you while gazing at its most beautiful sites from a different point of view.
Since the panoramic locations are not one but many, you may find it hard to decide your favourite one. Here are our picks of the best views of Rome.
Janiculum Hill
Janiculum Hill, located on the western bank of River Tiber, is the local’s favourite place to enjoy a pretty view. Its elegant terrace, which is very easy to reach by car or taxi, is on the upper side of the hill near the river Tiber, which benefits from a wide perspective of the most iconic monuments and buildings of the city. Once there, observe the impressive skyline of Rome and try to guess each site.
An insider’s tip: Janiculum Hill in Rome is a charming place at night but it is worthy in the morning as well. We suggest you reach it before noon: in fact, every day at 12 PM the cannon is fired just under the Garibaldi statue and its sound is heard even at long distances.
Being there at 12 PM makes you feel like traveling back to 1847, when the Pope decided to use this cannon to synchronize Churches bell at the same time.
Orange Gardens Rome
Located on the eastern bank of River Tiber, above Aventine Hill which is one of Rome’s former 7 Hills, the Orange Garden is a quiet site to take a break from the city chaos.
This blooming garden near the enchanting Key Hole takes the name from the lovely bitter orange trees that fill this beautiful green area. Together with ancient pines and many other plants, the orange trees adorn the garden with vivid colours and shadows, which make it the perfect place to relax during summer and a romantic getaway for two. Whatsmore, being just above the river level, it benefits from an incredible view of the whole city, from the Synagogue nearby to the faraway places.
Pincio
Pincio Terrace is maybe the most accessible scenic point when visiting Rome, due to its central location near Spanish Steps and Popolo Square. This observation deck is one of our favorite ones to glance at evocative sunsets enlightening the Eternal City.
Our tip for you: to climb up the terrace you can either go upstairs by the steps in Popolo Square, or reach it from a walking path that connects Pincio Terrace with Trinità dei Monti. In any case, wearing comfortable shoes will make your visit easier.
St. Peter’s Dome
There is nothing more iconic than St. Peter’s and its impressive dome, which is recognized as a Roman symbol. St. Peter’s dome is the best conclusion of a Vatican Tour, as from there it is possible to have a 360° overlook of the whole city.
You can reach its highest point either by climbing up 550 steps, or take the elevator, which will skip about half the itinerary of the steps.
Trinità dei Monti
Spanish Steps is definitely one of Rome’s must see sites and it is truly worth-seeing, so why not take the chance to see its upper views from the Terrace of Trinità dei Monti above?
The stunning steps were built during the XVIII Century, using the monumental architecture features of that time, to connect Pincio Hill with the below level. The best season to enjoy the view from Trinità dei Monti is surely in Spring, when the steps are decorated with colourful flowers.
