The city of Sanremo is known for being the city of flowers and music. This city is located in the Liguria region to the north of the city and is the most populated city in the region.

When we think of the name Sanremo, surely the first thing that comes to mind is the Sanremo Festival (Festival of Italian song) and the Ariston theater which is the one that hosts this event every year in February. However, the city of Liguria is also known as the city of flowers, that is why the famous flowers cannot be missing in any edition of the festivals in the box of the Ariston Theater.

Flowers of all colors cover the gardens of Sanremo and many tourists are amazed by the botanical beauty of this city. The city council protects all species and green has become an integral part of Sanremo’s history.

The local producers were those who made Sanremo the city of flowers thanks to its exports all over the world. Among the most remembered are the large crops of carnations and roses that arrived every year at the New Year’s concert in the Golden Hall in Vienna. This was the reason why the city of Sanremo decided to open the first flower market in 1914.

Where the name Sanremo comes from?

Many will wonder, where does the name of the city come from? Starting from the Roman origins of the city. At that time it was known as Castrum Sancti Romuli in honor of San Romolo the patron of Castrum, in dialect the name was San Romiu and it had a very strange sound for the town so little by little it became San Remo. Today Sanremo is used and was named after the largest festival in Italy.

Sanremo Festival

The Italian Song Festival or better known as the San Remo Festival is a music festival that takes place every year in Sanremo, Italy in the month of February.

Since 1956 the winner of this festival has been the artist who has obtained the right to represent Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest. This is one of the most media festivals in Italy and the statue of the Lion of Sanremo is the highest award for the winning musicians and artists. The songs that compete in the Italian song festival must have been composed by Italian authors with texts in Italian or also in dialect. Of course these songs must be unpublished which means never heard before. Don’t miss out on the Sanremo festival this year.
