Dozza is one of the most picturesque villages in northern Italy. It is located exactly in the province of Bologna 30 km from the city, in the Emilia Romagna region.

The particularity of this town is its picturesque murals that attract thousands of tourists and photographers every year. This town is also known as “Dozza the town of murals”. It has approximately ninety murals painted directly on the walls of the houses of the inhabitants of Dozza.

This medieval town not only has the murals but another of the most beautiful things is the Rocca. This rocca (castle) is located in the highest part of the town and is testimony that the town is from medieval times. La Rocca was built at the request of Caterina Sforza in 400 and then passed into the hands of the city council in 1960.

This picturesque town holds a contemporary manifestation every year in the third week of September, giving the opportunity to show works of art to many Italian and foreign artists. This event was born in the mid-60s and takes place every two years.

The Dozza murals were born together with the first manifestation of the event in 1960. These murals have transformed the historic center of the city into an open-air museum. Thousands of murals decorating houses make this town a museum and above all, a tourist attraction. For many artists this town is an art exhibition where they can show their own art and appreciate that of other artists. These murals represent ancient and contemporary stories and allow the town to be the witness of history.

In Dozza you will find a work of art in each corner and each one of them has a peculiarity so if you find yourself in this peculiar place, time will fly by if you take a walk. Beside each mural, you can read the title of the work and the author of it. You can even sometimes read the meanings of each one or open your imagination and give meaning to these beautiful works of art painted on the walls.
