Not so far from Rome and a few km from the city of Viterbo is the town of Marta around Lake Bolsena. This hidden town is the perfect place to relax with a walk along the lake shore or visit the picturesque town and all it has to offer.
This town is known as the fishermen’s town due to its proximity to the lake, but in addition to having the famous lake as a tourist attraction, Marta has much more to offer inside. One of the symbols of the town is undoubtedly the “Torre dell’Orologio” which means clock tower, of Etruscan origin.
Other attractions of this town are the Renaissance palace that belonged to the Farnese family and the sanctuary of the “Madonna del Monte”, a panoramic place.
The History of the Clock Tower
The tower symbol of the town, the Clock Tower that has a view of the lake, is 22 meters high. It has a pyramidal base and an octagonal body on top. This tower was built in the 12th century and served as a defense of the territory. During the following years, the tower suffered numerous damages which caused the Pope of that time to restore it and then the Farnese family in the 15th century.
In the festive period it is possible to enter the tower and enjoy the wonderful panorama of Lake Bolsena from the top.
In the tower there are representations on its sides. On the north side is the Evangelist Mark at the Last Supper, then the Virgin with the baby Jesus. On the south side there is a marble bas-relief with the Farnese family coat of arms.
