It used to be Ancient Rome’s biggest racing stadium, being over 2000 ft. in length and 380 ft. in width and it can house over 150,000 people at once.

The History of Circus Maximus

As previously mentioned, Circus Maximus is the largest racing stadium in Rome. It was created in the VI century BC and it was rebuilt multiple times throughout the centuries due to fires and natural events that destroyed it. Nowadays there are very few relics of the original construction of Circo Massimo. This place was used as a chariot stadium up until the VI century AD but, when it fell into disuse, they chose to demolish its stone buildings to repurpose the materials. In the 20th century, the place was starting to get filled with industrial buildings but Benito Mussolini chose to tear them down to use this large space for public events.

From chariot races to modern concerts

Circus Maximus was the protagonist of many important Roman events throughout the centuries. Hosting the popular chariot races, where the participants would do seven laps around Circo Massimo whilst mounted on small chariots carried by horses. Great prizes were offered and some of the slaves that were running the race could be set free if they won. Circus Maximus also housed recreations of important Roman battles, equestrian exhibitions and running races.
