Some History

As previously said, Giotto’s Bell Tower was first built in 1334 and designed by Giotto, who unfortunately never lived to see the tower because he died in 1337. The construction of the bell tower was carried on by Andrea Pisano and completed in 1359. The building’s main characteristic aesthetically is its marble in green, white and pink. One of the most interesting aspects of the Bell Tower is its first floor, designed by Giotto and decorated with 7 sculpted reliefs each on its four sides. 

Climbing Giotto’s Bell Tower: an unforgettable view

One of the most beloved aspects of the Giotto Bell Tower is the fact that you can climb to the top of the building and see the beauty of the city of Florence from above. The Campanile is 277 ft. high and you must climb 414 steps to get to the top but the view from above is definitely worth it!

If you want to get to the top of the building, you must buy an admission ticket which allows you to visit the museum for the next 72 hours but can only be used once. The Giotto Bell Tower is open every day from 08:30 AM to 07:30 PM and the admission ticket costs €30 each for adults and €12 each for children between 7 and 14 years old. Children under the age of 6 get to enter for free. With this ticket, you can also access the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, the Crypt and the Dome, which makes it definitely worth buying!
