The history and evolution of Museo Galileo

Museo Galileo was first created in 1927 because the Istituto di Storia della Scienza wanted to collect and catalog scientific collections from Italy. Museo Galileo only became what we know today in 2010 though and it nowadays houses over five thousand scientific instruments, some of which were fundamental for Galileo Galilei to accomplish what he’s managed to discover.

Galileo’s Treasures: exploring the remarkable scientific Instruments

As previously mentioned, the Museum houses important scientific instruments that were used by Galileo Galileo for his discoveries. At first, some of these instruments were held in the Uffizi Gallery, in a specific room called the Mathematics Room and, after being moved around throughout the years, they finally landed in Museo Galileo. The exhibition we see today is organized in chronological order and divided into themes. The Museum consists of two floors housing two different collections.

  • THE FIRST FLOOR:

The first floor of Museo Galileo is divided into nine rooms and houses the collection of the Medici Family, with pieces that date back to the XV century. Here you will be able to find important instruments such as Galileo Galilei’s telescopes and lenses, thermometers and more.

  • THE SECOND FLOOR:

The second floor is divided into nine rooms as well and it houses the collection of the Lorraine dynasty. This exhibition guides you through the journey of important discoveries like electricity and chemistry and it also houses machines that show the fundamentals of physics.
