Located on the Appian Way, in the south of the city of Rome, Parco degli Acquedotti is one of the most suggestive locations in the Eternal City and a great gathering spot for locals. Its name comes from the ruins of the aqueducts that surround this immense park and it’s unfortunately often overlooked by tourists.

Let us tell you something more about Parco degli Acquedotti in Rome and why you should add this location to your itinerary!

The History of Parco degli Acquedotti

Parco degli Acquedotti is nowadays one of the most green places in Rome. It extends for over 600 acres and it crosses many districts of Rome, such as the Appio Claudio, via delle Campanelle and the railway that connects Rome to Naples. Its aqueducts were constructed back in ancient Rome, as water supply was fundamental for the city of Rome. They consisted of a structure made of overlapping arches, which water ran through thanks to gravity. The area was crucial for the city of Rome but it was unfortunately abandoned throughout the centuries. In 1965, the area was redeveloped and since then it has become a beloved spot by locals.

What to see in the Park

As previously mentioned, the park is filled with relics of aqueducts. Here’s a list of some of them, going in-depth as to why they’re important:

  • THE VETUS AQUEDUCT: The oldest aqueduct in the Park. It got its water from the Aniene River;
  • ANIO NOVUS AQUEDUCT: One of the longest ones in the park but most of it is underground. It was constructed between 38 AD and 52 AD;
  • JULIA AQUEDUCT: Made by a friend of Emperor Augustus in honor of his family, called the Gens Julia. It extends for over 20km.
  • FELICE AQUEDUCT: This is probably the newest aqueduct in this park. It was built under the commission of Pope Sixtus V in 1586.
