Located in the heart of Rome, atop the Aventine Hill, Parco Savello is one of the most enchanting and beloved destinations for locals and tourists. This garden is more commonly known as the Orange Garden, as it’s surrounded by orange trees, which create an amazing atmosphere with their perfume. The garden expands to over 8000 square meters and it’s one of the best places to look at the Eternal City from above.

Let’s find out something more about the Orange Garden in Rome and why you should definitely visit it!

A quick look at the Orange Garden’s History

As previously mentioned, the Orange Garden is actually called Parco Savello. This is because the garden was created back in 1932 by architect Raffaele De Vico on the same grounds where a fortress belonging to the Savelli Family was located. An interesting aspect of this is that parts of the fortress that managed to stay intact throughout the centuries are still visible in the garden. Since the Orange Garden was built near the Basilica of Santa Sabina, it became the property of the Dominican Order of Santa Sabina which gifted the garden with its first orange tree!

The Garden’s enigmatic fountain

One of the most interesting aspects of the Orange Garden has to be its captivating fountain. Located at the main entrance, this granite fountain was apparently salvaged from an ancient Thermal Bath in Rome and it’s adorned with a mask of what seems to be the God of the Ocean. This mask was apparently created by Giacomo della Porta for another fountain in 1593. This fountain was then removed and the mask became part of another fountain located near the Tiber, which was later removed as well. After a long and tumultuous journey, the fountain found its home in the Orange Garden!
