Located in the Northern Venetian Lagoon, near Torcello, the Island of Burano is an island filled with colors, considered to be one of the most colorful places in the whole world! It has only 4000 inhabitants but it’s one of the most visited islands, mainly because of its beautiful colors and its Leaning Bell Tower, which is visible from afar.

Let’s find out something more about the Island of Burano and why you should visit it during your Venice Tours!

A colorful History: the birth of Burano Island

The Island of Burano was created when the residents of the town of Altino chose to live in the islands of the lagoon to escape the barbarians. They divided the island into six parts, which are: Murano, Ammiana, Costanziaca, Mazzorbo, Torcello and, of course, Burano.

At the time of the Venetian Republic, the Island of Burano only had 8000 inhabitants, a number that is, as previously mentioned, nowadays reduced to 4000.

The Painted facades: Burano’s iconic colorful houses

As said before, the city of Burano is considered to be one of the most colorful places in the whole world. The flamboyant colors of its houses, reflected in the waters of the channels surrounding the island, create a unique atmosphere, complemented by the Leaning Bell Tower. The buildings are oftentimes repainted to maintain their fresh style but the owners of the houses are not the ones that decide their color. They are told in advance though.

Walking through these beautiful buildings, you will be able to immerse yourself in part of the culture of Burano, as you will see a lot of elderly people working the typical Burano lace on chairs located right outside their houses and chatting.
