Trastevere is a neighborhood located in the city of Rome. It’s one of the main centers of the city’s nightlife, being surrounded by bars, pubs, clubs and restaurants. It’s also the perfect place to go get an aperitivo with friends!

Its name comes from the Latin “Trans Tiberem” which means beyond the Tiber.

If you’re considering spending a day in Trastevere, you’re in the right place. Here are some tips and tricks to get around and make the most of your day!  If you are interested in something unique you can try our Trastevere Private Tour.

Porta Portese Flea Market

If you happen to be in Trastevere on a Sunday, you should definitely go check out Porta Portese. It’s the biggest Flea Market in Rome and it opens from 07:00 AM to 02:00 PM every Sunday. It’s the perfect place to do some cheap vintage shopping. Its stalls are, in fact, filled with clothes, accessories, shoes, handbags, books, plants and even vinyl records! If while shopping you get a little hungry, there are also stands that sell all kinds of foods, going from sweet pastries to arrosticini and panini. This flea market gets quite crowded so we suggest getting there pretty early in the morning!

Villa Farnesina

If you want to immerse yourself in the beauty of the Renaissance period, we suggest you go visit Villa Farnesina. It’s an amazing house built by Agostino Chigi and later on bought by the Farnese family. It’s full of amazing frescoes by Raphael like the Loggia of Cupid and Psyche and it’s definitely worth a visit!

Janiculum Hill

Janiculum Hill is the second-highest hill in Rome, right after Monte Mario Hill. It offers an amazing view of the city and has become quite popular throughout the years thanks to its role in defending the city in history. Its atmosphere offers a perfect location to take a walk and escape the crowded city. Here are some other things to see on Janiculum Hill:

  • Fontana dell’Acqua Paola;
  • Church of San Pietro in Mortorio;
