Explore Villa Aldobrandini in Rome

The Eternal City of Rome is filled with many great things: amazing architecture, sculptures and monuments, tasty food, busy shopping streets and many beloved spots that tourists can’t miss, such as the Pantheon, the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, the Vatican Museums and many more. If you enjoy traveling by taking the unconventional path and exploring less crowded destinations or are simply looking for a way to escape the frenzy of the city, Villa Aldobrandini is definitely what you’re looking for!

Some history

Villa Aldobrandini gets its name from Aldobrandini, the nephew of Pope Clement VIII, who received this villa as a gift from his grandfather because he had managed to get a truce of peace with the French and participated in making some Italian provinces part of the State of the Church.

Villa Aldobrandini was filled with works of art from some of the most important Italian artists, such as Giovanni Bellini, Leonardo da Vinci, Tintoretto, Tiziano and many more.

Back in the day, Villa Aldobrandini also had a functioning Water Theatre that was truly ahead of its time! To make it work, they had to build an 8km long aqueduct that was also quite useful to supply water to other parts of the city.

The water theatre used to be a very entertaining place for guests of the Villa that could witness some great water tricks and listen to some music!

Location and Architecture

This Villa is located on top of the Quirinal Hill in Rome and it’s surrounded by enormous gardens from which you can see a big part of the Roman skyline and buildings like St. Peter’s dome! Villa Aldobrandini is a sophisticated building and a great representation of Baroque architecture.

Because of its location being quite elevated, it’s a little hard to spot it but this makes it even more peaceful and magnificent, especially during the sunset’s golden hour.

Taking a walk through the gardens of Villa Aldobrandini is the perfect way to be surrounded by nature and escape the city for a little while. With its tree trails, flower and fruit scents, ponds, and benches, you can totally get lost in the calmness of this magical place.

The scent of oranges and pomegranate coming from the trees only give a small idea of what this garden used to look like though… It was, in fact, a full-on botanical garden back in the day!

Conclusion

The city of Rome luckily holds a lot of beauty, some of it is more visible and accessible with very little research and some more needs to be discovered by wandering the streets and choosing to take the less traveled road. If you happen to be in Rome, make sure to find the time to see the most visited places by tourists because they’re very much worth it and then go relax in places like Villa Aldobrandini!
