Have you ever heard about the fascinating Piediluco? This is a small village located in the Umbria region, which is mostly known for its green areas, forests and nature to explore. Piediluco counts less than 600 inhabitants but still it has a myriad of anecdotes to discover. Its neverending wonders are the reason why it is named among the most beautiful towns in Italy.

Today Piediluco still preserves its medieval appearance. It lies near the blue waters of the lake that bears the same name, nestled between Mount Luco and Caperno, that can produce a unique echo effect thanks to its shape. The origin of the village dates back to the Roman Empire Age, when the area was reclaimed and eventually the impressive Marmore Falls, which are about 170 meters high, was created.

The village gained its name at that time. Piediluco in fact comes from Latin and it refers to the holy forests around it. Nature and history lovers will enjoy a relaxing tour to Piediluco at its best.

The ancient Albornoz Fortress

Albornoz Fortress is probably the most iconic symbol of Piediluco and anyone who is traveling to this charming town cannot complete his visit without staring at this monumental building located on Mount Luco. Being uphill, it provides a full overview of the surrounding lands, the lake and Piediluco itself which makes it the perfect stop for your memorable pictures.

Although the passing time left its mark and the building is clearly not completely intact, the Fortress keeps its massive appearance, with a medieval atmosphere. In the past, Albornoz Fortress was part of local battles between the most powerful rulers of Terni and Spoleto because of its strategic position.

Today the construction is divided in two different spaces. The Palace dates back to the XIII Century and it was originally built by the Brancaleoni family who changed the previous fortress of the X Century that had a defensive purpose, turning it into their home. However, the Fortress takes the name from Cardinal Albornoz, who was sent there by the Pope to proclaim the land as one of the many papal belongings nearby.

The Fortress is provided with a massive portal adorned with two stunning lions that are very similar to the ones used to decorate the church of San Francesco in Piediluco. As many other ancient castles, Albornoz Fortress was surrounded by huge walls meant to be a defensive measure.

Know before you go Piediluco is located near Terni at 20 kilometers from there and it is at just 1.5 hours driving distance from the Eternal City: this is why it is one of the most recommended Day Trips from Rome. The best way to reach the area is by car: this will give you the unmissable chance to explore both the old town and the fairy-tale lake nearby.

Piediluco is very close to the Marmore Falls, which are definitely one of the highlights of the green Umbria.
